Celebrate American Wetlands Month and
Drinking Water Week in May!
If you don't have time to plan activities for the first day
of Spring (March 20) and Earth Day (April 22), you can still celebrate American
Wetlands Month and Drinking Water Week in May. Many of the ideas listed in
last month's newsletter can be adapted for these celebrations or you can
create new events. (See the enviroscape web page at www.jtainc.com for last
month's newsletter if you missed it.) Send us photos and information about
your activity or event. We may highlight your group in the next
newsletter!
AMERICAN WETLANDS MONTH . . . If you need ideas
for American Wetlands Month activities or information about wetlands, check
out the Terrene Institute's Wetlands Celebration newsletter or web site:
www.terrene.org. One interesting wetlands fact from the web site: "Wetlands
are more than water reserves. When water enters a wetland, the wetland acts
as a purifier, cleaning the water before it exits. Wetlands do this by removing,
retaining and transforming nutrients, processing wastes and trapping
sediment."
The Terrene Institute also has materials for American Wetlands
Month including brochures, fact sheets, buttons, stickers and Teenage Mutant
Ninja Turtles coloring books.
A conference to celebrate American Wetlands Month, "Communities
Working for Wetlands," will be May 7-9 in Alexandria, Virginia. The conference
is a great place to meet others working with wetlands and to learn more about
wetlands. Several field trips and a Capitol Hill reception are planned during
the conference. Contact Terrene Institute, 4 Herbert St., Alexandria, VA
22305, 703/548-5473, fax: 703/548-6299, or e-mail: terrinst@aol.com.
DRINKING WATER WEEK . . . Drinking Water Week
will be celebrated internationally May 4-10. This year's theme, "Drinking
Water Counts On You," focuses on mathematics. The Blue Thumb Projectþs
goal is to enhance the publics' understanding that water is an essential
element of life and needs to be managed for the good of all. The Blue Thumb
education campaign, coordinated by the American Water Works Association,
develops a materials packet each year with ideas for community participation
in conserving, protecting and getting involved in water-related activities
during Drinking Water Week and throughout the year. To order a kit (for a
minimal charge), which includes camera-ready brochures and ads, poster and
media guide, call 800/926-7337. Many of the materials will also be posted
on AWWAþs web site: www.awwa.org/bluethum.htm. For more information
contact AWWA, 6666 West Quincy Avenue, Denver, CO 80235.

New Tips from the Field!
-
Diana Allen of University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension
Service in Sarpy County uses two enviroscape models at the same time
- one showing pollution and the other with BMPs in place.
-
Folks at the Soil and Water Conservation District in
Topeka, Kansas, affix a PVC pipe to their enviroscape model to drain
the lake into a 5-gallon bucket. They also built a light-weight stand with
an overhead mirror out of PVC pipe as a stand-alone demonstration table.
-
Jane Halling of Atchison County (KS) Farm Bureau uses
a "Moisture Magnet," similar to a chamois, instead of a sponge. It "worked
better than a sponge" she writes. They can also be cut to a smaller size.

Trout Unlimited Builds Successful Program Around EnviroScape
Trout Unlimited's Northwestern Carolina Chapter has just been
named TU's 1996 Gold Trout winner. Part of their success story is their community
education efforts, centered on the enviroscape program. The chapter donated
10 enviroscape models to area schools to teach students causes and solutions
to nonpoint sources of water pollution. "Education begs investing. Our schools
need help and the enviroscape model is a great example of what we can do,"
said former chapter President Douglas Wilkins in the Trout Magazine article
announcing the chapter's award.
Congratulations to the TU Northwestern Carolina Chapter! Keep
up the great work!

New Tips from the Field!
-
Use benzine (at hardware stores) on a rag to remove any sticky
adhesive from felt pieces left on your model too long.
-
Eileen Tramontana in Florida uses a rag instead of a sponge for
faster clean-up. She also uses film canisters to hold the drink mixes.
-
From Monica at Data Prompt in Virginia, "recycle your onion
bags and use them to carry your wet items."
-
The Delaware Solid Waste Authority informs us that a few drops
of blue food coloring in the rain and groundwater makes the "pure" water
visible and is pleasingly aquamarine.
-
If using food coloring, use rubber gloves!
-
Clay is a wonderful thing . . . you can use it to cover the
groundwater holes in the enviroscape II, to plant trees in various places,
to hold the train more securely on its tracks - and you can even use it to
plug up any holes or crevices on vehicles that may leak.
-
For those times when you don't have enough staff resources at an exhibit,
Kyle Meyers of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Service created a
static exhibit with her enviroscape by using photos to show the model and
numbers to identify the text with the nonpoint sources on the model.
-
And here's our ongoing reference list . .
.
-
To make trash for your hazardous waste landfill, tear up bits of an
old egg carton or styrofoam.
-
Following a demonstration, place the very wet items in a well-ventilated
laundry or hosiery bag for them to dry - or an onion bag!.
-
A rubber band will hold the storm drain.
-
The MicroMachines set 65020 titled #18 Harvesters, which includes a
'56 Ford pickup, a furrow machine, a tractor AND a small standing farmer
and pig, is available in toy stores.
-
Punch a hole in the plastic stoppers that come in your enviroscape
II map, insert one in the vinyl tubing opening and you have a working storm
drain that holds the storm pipe in place.
-
Use Cocoa Krispies for manure and oatmeal for crop residue.
-
Use real snow in the winter months.
-
Use a toothbrush to clean your buildings.
-
Cut your own felt pieces.
-
Use a Rubbermaid salt & pepper shaker for the cocoa and drink
mixes.
-
Use sugarless Kool-Aid outside to avoid flies and clumps.
-
Or, use water with food coloring to avoid flies.
-
Use sand or real soil for sediment instead of cocoa.
-
For carrying more than one model, use the nylon carrying bag for the
different maps and the heavy duty carrying case for the base(s), groundwater
component and accessories - you may even have room for handouts!
-

-
Use mini chocolate chips for manure.
-
Cut cotton swabs in half for Wetlands root demonstration so that itþs
more realistic and uses less swabs!
-
Make small clay rolls (logs) for a base to hold fence pieces. You can
also make clay bases for animals so they stand up better.
-
Use model railroad landscaping material - Life-Like brand Grass (Model
#1107), and Earth (Model #1109) for a realistic representation of soil and
grass clippings. When the material reaches the lake as pollutants, it
floats.
-
Recycle punch hole circles - sprinkle them on enviroscape for trash
or use in landfill on Hazardous Waste model.
-
Become a house painter and spray paint your houses if they become dull
after repeated use.
-
Try cinnamon instead of cocoa - when purchased in bulk, cinnamon may
be less expensive than cocoa.
-
Use rubber bands for holding in wells as well as for storm drain.

ENVIROSCAPE NEWS
August/September 1996
EnviroScape Makes A Difference
"The success rate of the use of the model was such that, in
the Spring of 1996, a second enviroscape model was purchased with PED grant
funds," reports the brochure describing Bowie, Maryland's three-year public
awareness campaign to improve the water quality of the Patuxent River.
enviroscape was a significant component of the Patuxent Estuary
Demonstration Project's efforts to make residents aware of ways they can
modify their lifestyle in and around the home to lessen their own effects
on water quality in their area.
The enviroscape model was intended for use by teachers in the
Bowie Cluster of schools within the Prince George's County Public School
System.
Following a workshop in the fall of 1994 to show teachers how
to use the model in the classroom, public school teachers used enviroscape
on a monthly basis, both in the classroom and in after school study
sessions.
The second model was formally presented to the Bowie Cluster
OASIS school May 20 at a regular meeting of the City Council.
Mayor Gary Allen presented a "Certificate of Ownership" to
Pat Brooks, Chief Educational Officer of the Bowie Cluster/Bowie High School
Principal, culminating the partnership between Bowie and Bowie Cluster
administrators and faculty to improve the understanding of water quality
issues by Bowie Cluster students.
Additional information on this successful program can be obtained
by calling Bowie's Department of Planning and Economic Development at (301)
262-6200, ext. 3047.
